What do you enjoy most about teaching at Het Gymlokaal?

I love the vibe and the sense of community at the gym. There’s a youthful, lively, very open and welcoming atmosphere.

What is your background?

I’ve been practising yoga since 2007 and have been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for just over five years. I completed my first Yoga Teacher Training in 2014, then continued to specialise further in 2015 and 2016, and since then I keep taking trainings in anatomy and alignment every year. But most of my knowledge comes from my daily practice under the guidance of my teachers David Robson and Jelena Vesic.

What is unique about your classes and the way you teach?

In my teaching style there’s a lot of room for personal attention before the class begins. I like to hear about people’s habits, lifestyle and any limitations or physical challenges, so I can give advice on how to approach these during the class. This is because Ashtanga is an intense practice that requires discipline and understanding to maintain a stable and healthy yoga journey.

What is your speciality within the field of movement?

I don’t really have a speciality. I’m genuinely fascinated by human anatomy and how the human body is designed to achieve incredible things. I love to keep learning and I’m sometimes in awe when experiencing the connection between the physical, emotional and mental body and how it’s all intertwined with how we experience life.

What qualities should every good trainer have?

I think every trainer should be able to ‘feel’ the group and guide them as a whole, while simultaneously being aware of each individual within that group. The trainer should be able to motivate participants to explore their limits without being pushy. Has a sense of humour, but is also compassionate and empathetic. And always humble and open to learning more.

What can people expect from you as a trainer and from your classes?

That my classes are hard work, but with understanding for everyone’s situation. I give lots of tips to improve your technique and posture. I will always challenge you, but I also respect it when you decide to take it easier. I always take the time to listen to you before or after class if you need support.

What can you offer or teach people?

I can teach people how to develop discipline and build strength (both physically and mentally), but also how to let go when I feel that’s what you need in order to grow.
